Liederkreis

Judith Berkson is a composer, vocalist, and pianist. Her research centers around tuning and microtonality as they relate to memory and perception, exploring the small spaces between similarity and difference. She cites influences ranging from cantorial chant to jazz standards, and lieder from composers such as Schubert and Schumann. Her music offers a contemplative, spare space for the reworking of traditional structures within contemporary sonic modes and techniques. Collaborations have included work with Kronos Quartet, Laurie Anderson, JACK Quartet, Vijay Iyer, Alvin Lucier, Mivos Quartet, Wet Ink and Yarn/Wire. Recordings on ECM Records, Fresh Sound, Pi, and Notice Recordings. Film music presented at Venice Biennale, SXSW and Outfest LA. REACTOR

REACTOR is an energetic and improvisational rock trio who has been described by audiences as “bluesy Primus” and “like one of those projects on SST records that says they’re a punk band but is really a jazz fusion band”. Combining post-hendrix-ian guitar work of James Powers (March Fourth, JP-3), off the wall bass work of Xylyn Hathaway (Ron Steen, Gordon Lee), and the grounded but creative drumming of Paul Moyer (Pablo Rivarola, Merle Law), the band was conceived as a vehicle for Powers (normally a trombonist) and Hathaway (normally an upright bassist) to present original songs that would not fit into the idioms that they typically find themselves playing. This eclectic music is funky as often as punk-y and the lyrics are as relatable as they are philosophical.
