Judith Berkson TRIO w/ Andrew Jones and Mike Lockwood

Judith Berkson Trio brings the acclaimed composer, vocalist, and pianist’s distinctive ECM Records repertoire to life in an intimate trio setting with Portland musicians Andrew Jones and Mike Lockwood. Berkson’s music explores tuning, microtonality, memory, and perception, creating contemplative spaces where jazz, cantorial chant, art song, and contemporary composition converge. A collaborator with artists and ensembles including Kronos Quartet, Laurie Anderson, Vijay Iyer, and JACK Quartet, Berkson has presented work at venues and festivals worldwide. This performance highlights her richly nuanced piano music through the sensitive interplay of three exceptional improvisers.

Judith Berkson is a composer, vocalist, and pianist. Her research centers around tuning and microtonality as they relate to memory and perception, exploring the small spaces between similarity and difference. She cites influences ranging from cantorial chant to jazz standards, and lieder from composers such as Schubert and Schumann. Her music offers a contemplative, spare space for the reworking of traditional structures within contemporary sonic modes and techniques. Collaborations have included work with Kronos Quartet, Laurie Anderson, JACK Quartet, Vijay Iyer, Alvin Lucier, Mivos Quartet, Wet Ink and Yarn/Wire. Recordings on ECM Records, Fresh Sound, Pi, and Notice Recordings. Film music presented at Venice Biennale, SXSW and Outfest LA. Festival appearances: Angel City Jazz Festival, Picasso Museum Malaga, National Sawdust, Women from Space Festival, and Bang on a Can. 

RICHIE GREENE

Richie Greene is a composer, arranger, and instrument builder. He has written music for
the Oregon Symphony, 45th Parallel Chamber Orchestra, and has had his music set by
choreographers and dancers of the New York City Ballet. Richie’s primary focus centers
on the psychoacoustics of harmonic systems, working in just intonation and
temperaments other than 12-equal. In 2025, he was awarded the Andries Deinum Prize
for Visionaries and Provocateurs to support the development of MIDI instruments which
borrow the same keyboard layout as 16th century microtonal harpsichords. He currently
lives in Portland Oregon where he composes, teaches, and collaborates within the
community.
