KEITH WITTY TRIO

Formed in New York in 2010, THIEFS emerged from the meeting between New York bassist Keith Witty and Parisian saxophonist Christophe Panzani. United by a shared passion for Jazz and Hip-Hop, and driven by a desire to explore new musical territories and hybrid forms, the duo quickly developed a distinctive sound that blurred the boundaries between improvisation, beat culture, sound design, and contemporary songwriting. THIEFS’ self-titled debut album, released in 2013 on Melanine Harmonique Records, was met with critical acclaim in both France and the United States. In March 2013, The New York Times described the group as “an unexpected collision between the jazz trio Fly, the Hip-Hop of Antipop Consortium, and the R&B sensibility of Frank Ocean.”

Following the success of the debut release, THIEFS received several prestigious U.S. grants and awards, including support from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, while bringing its music to some of the most respected venues and festivals across the United States. In 2018, THIEFS released its second album, Graft (La Greffe), on the French label Jazz&People, adding David Frazier Jr. as the trio’s permanent drummer, and featuring guest appearances by Aaron Parks, Gaël Faye and Mike Ladd.

THIEFS’ latest project, Survivalism (2026, The Drops Music), continues the musical and conceptual trajectory initiated with Graft.
Expanding its compositional language, production techniques, and sonic experimentation, THIEFS pushes even further the possibilities of the “pianoless trio” format. The project deepens the group’s reflections on human displacement, reinvention, and collective identity in the face of conflict and catastrophe, while pushing back against the notion of “static culture” — the idea that cultural purity once existed before cross-cultural exchange. THIEFS instead affirms that all culture is born through transformation, hybridity, and movement.

ANDREW JONES

Since arriving in Portland in 2009, multifarious bassist Andrew Jones has been difficult to categorize. While he’s appeared on more than a dozen Portland jazz albums, he’s equally at home in a free improvisation collective, accompanying a songwriter or collaborating with artists in dance and theatre. Jones’ egalitarian sensibility has become a mainstay not only across the city’s musical landscape, but also appearing on stages in Europe, Australia and all over North America with musicians like the critically acclaimed Julia Holter. Jones has also been crafting his own unique musical world with the electronically augmented & lyrically-driven art songs of his projects and/or you  and The Crenshaw. In 2025 he released an EP of forward-leaning compositions featuring Mike Gamble, Mike Lockwood, Noah Bernstein and Noah Simpson, a quintet he calls Jones & I.

RICHARD LAWS

R. Laws is a musician and composer in Portland working mostly on homemade software instruments. He believes technology is only useful when used incorrectly, and that music that doesn’t surprise you is basically worthless.
