December 18th, 2011: Nate Wooley at the Bamboo Grove Salon (134 SE Taylor, 971-207-8476) on at 8pm with Jonathan Sielaff (bass
clarinet, Golden Retriever), Eva Aguila (electronics, Kevin Shields),
Dan Sasaki (drums) and Jordan Dykstra (viola, Dash!). Sliding scale
door $5-15. 8PM.
The Creative Music Guild presents Nate Wooley playing solo and then
collaborating with some of Portland’s finest musicians. Nate is a
native Oregonian who moved to New York City in 2001 and has since
become one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the burgeoning Brooklyn jazz, improv, noise, and new music scenes. He has performed regularly with such icons as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada, as well as being a collaborator with some of the brightest lights of his generation like Chris Corsano, C.Spencer Yeh, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorson.
Wooley’s solo playing has often been cited as being a part of an
international revolution in improvised trumpet. Along with Peter
Evans and Greg Kelley, Wooley is considered one of the leading lights
of the American movement to redefine the physical boundaries of the
horn, as well as demolishing the way trumpet is perceived in a
historical context still overshadowed by Louis Armstrong. A
combination of vocalization, extreme extended technique, noise and
drone aesthetics, amplification and feedback, and compositional rigor
has led one reviewer to call his solo recordings “exquisitely
hostile”.
In the past three years, Wooley has been gathering international
acclaim for his idiosyncratic trumpet language. Time Out New York
has called him “an iconoclastic trumpeter”, and Downbeat’s Jazz
Musician of the Year, Dave Douglas has said, “Nate Wooley is one of
the most interesting and unusual trumpet players living today, and
that is without hyperbole”. His work has been featured at the SWR
JazzNow stage at Donaueschingen, the WRO Media Arts Biennial in
Poland, Kongsberg and Copenhagen Jazz Festivals, and the New York New Darmstadt Festivals. He is currently an artist-in-residence at
Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room and just completed a residency at
London’s CafÉ Oto.
Jonathan Sielaff, a longtime Portland resident, plays bass clarinet
in the Golden Retriever whose recent album, Light Cones, just came
out on Thrill Jockey. Eva Aguila is an electronics musician who
relocated to Portland from Los Angelas. She has released records
under the alias “Kevin Shields” on Ecstatic Peace, Deathbomb Arc,
Blackest Rainbow, and Weird Forest. Aguila has had the pleasure of
opening for acts such as Sonic Youth, mÚm and others. Dan Sasaki is
a Portland drummer whose first band, in 1985, was with Jim Valley,
from Paul Revere and the Raiders. In the early 2000’s, he was a
contributor to Tom Greenwood’s Jackie-O Motherfucker. In 1994, Dan was on tour in Russia. How he got four tympani there and back
remains a mystery. Jordan Dykstra is a musician living in Portland,
Oregon. He plays many different instruments, but his primary focus is
the viola (both acoustic and extremely amplified). His band is called
Dash!
